WARR ACRES — Putnam City West earned 3-2 win over Putnam City during the Pirates’ senior night Tuesday (Sept. 22).

“Anytime you can play spoiler on senior night, it is a great win,” Putnam City West coach Tyler Thompson said via text. “We knew PCO would be a hard beat on a night like that.”

As usual, the Patriots went as their serve went.

“I know I sound like a broken record on the serves but it is what makes us go,” Thompson said after his squad had 28 aces. “What really hurt us was our 17 serving errors. Sets 1 and 5 we have high ace to error ratio and we win comfortably. Set 2 we have 8 service errors and we lose badly.”

West won the first set 25-16. Original countered with a 25-17 win. The Patriots followed with a 25-22 victory. PC forced a fifth set with 25-21 win. West won the final set 15-9.

Junior Kami Liles led West with 10 aces. Senior Zoe Salas followed with nine aces.

Thompson called junior Willow Hardway the team’s “X factor” and said she played her best game of the season. Hardway had 15 kills.

“PCO is a big team that gave us some real issues at the net but Willow (Hardway) really embraced the challenge and swung through the big blocks.”

UP NEXT

The Patriots (8-3) will play Lawton, Millwood, Chickasha, Tuttle JV and Tuttle at the Tuttle Volleyball Tournament Saturday (Sept. 26).

“This was a big win for us heading into our busy stretch with tournaments next two weekends and another big rivalry game against PCN next week,” Thompson said.

The Pirates (4-14) travel to 4A Bethany Monday (Sept. 28) at 6 p.m.

The Bronchos (15-11) have lost four straight matches, including a 3-1 loss to 3A Casady on Thursday.
