ENID — Putnam City West’s volleyball team hadn’t played in 11 days before the 3-0 win over Enid Tuesday (Sept. 8).

The Patriots’ contest with Midwest City scheduled for Sept. 3 was postponed to Oct. 8 as both teams were dealing with sickness. Their last matchup was a 3-0 sweep of 4A Harding Charter Prep on Aug. 27.

West (6-2) hadn’t really practiced before heading north to meet the Pacers (4-5).

West coach Tyler Thompson said the excuses for a flat performance were there but his Patriots didn’t have to use them.

“This was a game that in the past, West would have lost,” Thompson said via text.

Despite getting into a hole, Thompson saw his squad overcome that and “grind out a win.”

West won the first set, 25-17 but fell behind in the second as Enid reached the 24 mark first.

“But, we never lost our composure,” Thompson said after a 28-26 win.

The Patriots played from behind in the third set as Enid was the first to 23.

“In past, that was us giving up leads and losing late but this team is learning how to win,” Thompson said.

At one point during the third set, West was down 15-9 and struggling.

“Heading to serve line I told the girls, ‘we are fine, we got this’ and they had a look of confidence in themselves.

The Patriots outscored Enid 16-8 to close out the set and the match.

Junior Kami liles had six kills, sophomore Mia Lino added seven kills, and junior Willow Hardway notched eight kills in the win.

West has a week off before traveling to Choctaw (4-9) Tuesday (Sept. 15) at 6 p.m.

The Yellowjackets earned a 3-0 win over Midwest City Tuesday. They will face Putnam City North this Thursday.
