OKLAHOMA CITY — Putnam City North rolled up nearly 450 yards of total offense and took advantage of mistakes by rival Putnam City West Friday (Oct. 23) for 62-12 win, which bolstered its playoff standing in district 6A-II-1.

The Panthers (2-6, 2-2) rebounded from last week’s nighmarish 66-0 loss to district champ Choctaw.

Putnam City North coach Brian Lockart didn’t watch the Choctaw game film with his team.

“We saw it. It’s not who we are,” Lockart said.

The Panthers’ frantic pace on offense returned and North scored on seven of their nine possessions in the first half for a 48-6 lead at halftime.

The high-tempo approach was by design for his young squad.

“Let’s get to the ball, get down, call the play, snap the ball, and let’s go,” Lockart said about the pace. “I think that we just get in a better rhythm instead of huddling every play and thinking about things.”

North opened the game with a three-play scoring drive when junior quarterback Owen McMahan connected with senior Jaelyn Taylor for a 34-yard strike.

After a fumble by West senior Kendyll Weaver, the Panthers drove to the Patriot 15-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. However, West went backward as North harassed senior wideout-turned-quarterback Aizjon Robinson in the backfield.

Sophomore Ryder Rosholt returned the Patriots’ short punt to the West 3. Fellow sophomore Vaisaulu Toles punched it in on the next play to make it 14-0.

While the Patriots were stuck neutral, the Panthers pounced after West failed to convert on fourth down on the next two possessions which gave North a short field.

Senior Gavin Davis’ 35-yard run led to junior Jasiah Davis’ 1-yard TD run. Jasiah Davis also added a 28-yard scoring run.

Early in the second quarter, the Panthers already had a 28-0 lead.

After that, the pace slowed a bit. Both teams turned the ball over on downs. West finally had some life after Weaver broke tackles just beyond the line of scrimmage and then outran everyone for an 82-yard touchdown run.

North resumed the pace. Less than two minutes later, McMahan hit sophomore Dorian Bradford for a score.

Then, Panther kicker Ozzie Munnerlyn squibbed the kickoff and the Patriots muffed it. North recovered which set up a short field. A 35-yard catch from sophomore Rhylen Harris set up Toles for a 3-yard score.

West punted again. North practiced a 2-minute drill from that point. The Panthers covered 86 yards in 1:30. Harris had another big catch for 29 yards. Gavin Davis capped it off with a 3-yard run on a reverse pitch from Toles.

North elected to go for two mainly to work on 2-point conversion plays, Lockart said.

“There’s still things I want to work on. We’ve struggled in the extra-point game. We lost in overtime because we missed an extra point,” Lockart said, referring to the 35-34 OT loss to Putnam City. “So we have some two-point plays that we’re trying to put in there in case we want to go to that.”

The scenario is still a work in progress. Toles couldn’t handle an errant snap and lost 15 yards on the failed conversion.

“We’ll go back to the drawing board and continue to work on those kind of plays.”

The second half featured a running clock but the Panthers scored two more times. Rosholt took the opening kickoff of the half 76 yards for a score. In the fourth quarter, McMahan capped off the North scoring with a 62-yard strike to Taylor.

On the ensuing drive, Weaver fumbled again. The Panthers drove to the West 1 but also fumbled. Weaver redeemed himself with a 99-yard touchdown run.

McMahan was 13-of-27 with 280 yards and three scores. Jasiah Davis proved 81 of the Panthers’ 167 yards on the ground. He scored twice. Gavin Davis added 37 yards and a touchdown. Toles had 30 yards on two scores.

Taylor had two catches, both for touchdowns, and 96 yards. Harris had 85 yards receving and junior Zak Pettie added 56 yards on four catches.

For West, Weaver had 10 carries for 169 yards and both Patriot scores.
