NORMAN — Putnam City West couldn’t overcome costly miscues and Norman quarterback Joe Kelley in a 49-15 loss Thursday (Nov. 5) to end the regular season.
The Patriots (2-8, 1-5) had two punts blocked and returned for touchdowns. Kelley accounted for the other five scores. The senior rushed 10 times for 121 yards and two scores. He also completed 5 of 10 passes 85 yards and three more touchdowns.
After Kelley’s first touchdown pass, West struck back. Senior Kendyll Weaver fielded the ensuing kickoff, reversed field and sprinted down the sideline for a score. Senior Brandon Chaj’s extra point was blocked.
The Tigers (6-4, 4-2) extended the lead to 14-6 after Kelley threw another touchdown pass.Then, Norman senior Oakley Caruthers scooped up a blocked punt for a score to make it 21-6.
West led a march down the field, following the kickoff. The lengthy push lasted from the first quarter and into the second.
Weaver converted a third down with a 26-yard run. Senior Aizjon Robinson scored on a 44-yard run to make it 21-12.
After another West drive stalled, senior Brandon Chaj drilled a 30-yard field goal. The Tigers added on more score just before halftime to make it 28-15.
In the third quarter, Kelley added two more touchdown runs.
West’s Weaver gave the Patriots another opportunity with a third quarter with an interception. Later, Putnam City West was forced to punt.
Norman also scored on another blocked punt for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Robinson gained 74 yards on eight carries and a touchdown. Weaver ran the ball 26 times for 61 yards.The Patriots only had seven yards in the air.

The Patriots will go on the road to play the winner of Muskogee (5-4, 2-2) and Sand Springs (3-5, 2-2) next Friday (Nov. 13). The Roughers and Sandites play for third place in 6A-II-2 this Friday.
