Putnam City West coach Rickey Lewis calls Anthony Dupree a “Saturday Player.”
Dupree was inserted in running back spot last Friday (Sept. 25) after fellow senior Kendyll Weaver went down with an injury. The senior responded with 127 yards on nine carries and a score. Dupree averaged 14.1 yards per rush.
“It’s just the level of commitment and play we’ve gotten from this young man in the two years he’s been here, but especially this year as a senior,” Lewis said via phone after the Patriots’ 16-15 comeback win.
Lewis had a message to college coaches.
“Somebody come get him.“
Dupree has already made an impact on defense, with 50+ tackles over the first five games.
OUTLASTING IKE
The Patriots’ roster is smaller than some in 6A-II but Lewis was heartened see similar numbers from his opponent.
“They got tired first,” Lewis said. “We’re in great shape. We have a great conditioning coach. We work our guys very, very, very hard. Because we know we’re going to play Iron Man football, so we try to prep them for that.”
The Eagles had a 15-3 lead in the fourth quarter before the West comeback.
“Finally, we got against a team who had to play Iron Man football as well, and we look like a team in better shape. Because I know we are. It’s just usually we’re playing 100 guys against our 40.”
QUARTERBACK SHUFFLE
Junior KJ Cowell completed 2 of 4 passes for 44 yards before his lower leg injury in the first quarter. Cowell also had 47 yards rushing on six carries.
Senior Aizjon Robinson, the team’s best receiver, filled in at quarterback with 24 yards passing, completing 1 of 2 passes. Robinson also ran for 76 yards on seven touches with the go-ahead touchdown.
If Cowell can’t play, Robinson will probably be West’s first choice. Robinson saw some action as a signal-caller as a sophomore and junior.
“(Robinson) knows the offense,” Lewis said. “We plugged and played (against Ike), and we gritted it out.”
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Before his injury, Weaver ran for 55 yards on eight carries.
- Senior Ishmael Fields had one catch for 40 yards, which led to West’s first score, a field goals. Fields also had two interceptions in the fourth quarter.
- Dupree had 13 tackles (seven solo) for the game as well as three tackles for loss. Weaver added seven tackles and one for a loss.
- Fields and sophomore Isaiah Johnson each had seven tackles as well.
