WEATHERFORD — After building a 2-0 lead, Bethany had to overcome a late run by Weatherford Tuesday (Aug. 11) before capturing the deciding fifth set in a 3-2 season opening win.

The Bronchos won the first two sets, 25-14 and 25-23. The Eagles answered with 25-23 and 25-24 wins. Bethany then earned a 15-12 victory to take the match.

“The girls stayed calm and we kept reminding them to focus on the little things and to control the game and not let Weatherford control the momentum,” Bethany coach Kerri Cagle said via text.

Senior middle blocker Emma Sailer had 12 kills and four blocks while junior outside hitter Isla Thompson added 11 kills.

Senior middle blocker Keyaira Ohern had seven kills, three aces and two blocks. Sophomore setter Vivian Flinton followed with seven kills and five blocks.

Senior middle blocker Gracee Geissler notched 15 digs while senior defensive specialist Kennedy Palmer added 12 digs.

Junior setter Hannah Bergman finished with five digs and three blocks.

UP NEXT

The Bronchos will make the trip up to Verdigris Friday and Saturday (Aug. 14-15) for the Rumble on Route 66.

On Friday, Bethany faces Tecumseh, Catoosa, Verdigris and Regent Prep. On Saturday, the Bronchos meet Tuttle, Cache and Inola.

Play begins at 9 a.m. The top-4 teams in pool play advance to bracket play.

Bethany has won the event three years in a row.
