Putnam City’s softball squad opens the new season Monday (Aug. 10) with a new coach, but a familiar face at the helm.
Pirate baseball coach Joe Wood takes over the team, replacing Brooklyn Sparkman who went 12-52 in her 2-year stint.
Original went 5-26 last season and was 0-12 in district play.
“The goal is to build consistency through hard work, and compete the whole game,” Wood said via a preseason questionnaire.
Wood has a large group of seniors on the squad including catcher Francis Meza, outfielder Natalie Luevano, center fielder Paytyn Grigsby, infielder Lex Hatlelid, right fielder Cadence O’Dell-Brown, infielder Addison Grier, third baseman and pitcher Tessalynn Goodner and first baseman Maddison Gossman.
This season, the Pirates will compete in 6A District 4 with Piedmont, Owasso, Southmoore, Jenks, Muskogee and Tulsa Union. Of that group, Owasso was the lone team to reach the state tournament. The Rams fell in the semifinals to eventual state champion Mustang.

Putnam City opens the season at Southeast Monday (Aug. 10) at 5 p.m.
The Spartans, normally a 5A school, are playing an independent schedule as a member of the Oklahoma City Public Schools’ All-City Athletic Conference.
Southeast was 24-4 last season, playing a schedule of primarily Oklahoma City Public Schools and Tulsa Public Schools.
The Spartans finished the season with a Turnpike 44 championship, a postseason tournament made up of Oklahoma City and Tulsa public schools.
The Pirates split a doubleheader with Southeast on Aug. 18, 2025. Putnam City earned a 7-5 win and the Spartans rebounded with a 12-10 victory.
