WARR ACRES — After an early Putnam City West lead, Putnam City roared back to a 14-12 win Tuesday (Sept. 29) on Senior Night.
The slugfest featured 26 runs and 23 hits.
With the win, the Pirates earned a regular season sweep of rival West.
The Patriots (4-20) scored three runs in the first due to three walks, a hit batsmen and a single. Original countered with a leadoff triple from sophomore D’Najah Jarrell, who later stole home.
West scored five runs in the second on six walks, a double from Kaydence Lopez and a single from Aalyiah Lewis.
In the bottom half of the inning, senior Addison Grier’s double to highlight a 2-run inning to make it 8-3, West.
In the fourth inning, the Pirate offense came alive with back-to-back-to-back triples from Gossman, senior Francis Meza and senior Natalie Luevano. Grier’s infield single tied the game at 8-8.
PC (7-16-1) took the lead for good in the fourth inning. Senior Tessa Goodner tripled home Alexandra Hatlelid, who singled with one out. Singles from Gossman and Meza made it 11-8.
West answered with two runs in the fifth inning on a single, a walk and a Putnam City error.
The Pirates’ rallied with two outs in the bottom of the inning with three straight singles, two groundouts that scored runs and a hit by pitch.
The Patriots added two more runs in the sixth on four walks and another hit by pitch to make it 14-12.
West loaded the bases in the seventh, thanks to three walks. Lopez lined out to Hatlelid in the circle to end the game.
For West, Lopez and Lewis were each 2-for-4. Lopez scored twice and Lewis drove in three runs.
For Original, Hatlelid went 4-for-5 with three runs scored. in all, five Pirates had more than one hit each.
Hatlelid struck out eight batters while walking 16. She entered the game in the first inning in relief and pitched the rest of the way.

The Patriots and Pirates await their 6A regional assignments. The playoffs will be played next Thursday and Friday (Oct. 8-9).
