OKLAHOMA CITY — Putnam City West lost its starting quarterback and dug a 15-point hole but roared back in the fourth quarter for a 16-15 win over Lawton Eisenhower Friday (Sept. 25) in the 6A-II-1 opener.

“It was just a knock down, drag out fight. It was the grittiest of grittiest wins,” Putnam City West coach Rickey Lewis said via phone.

Ike (0-5, 0-1) took control early, scoring on the first drive of the game with an 11-yard touchdown run from junior Chadwick Anderson from the Wildcat formation.

West (3-2, 1-0) answered late in the first quarter. Quarterback KJ Cowell connected with senior Ishmeal Fields on a short pass. Fields made two defenders miss and sprinted down the Ike sideline 40 yards into the red zone. The Patriot drive stalled but senior Brandon Chaj booted a 32-yard field goal to make it 8-3.

Ike continued to move the ball but the Eagles missed two field goals in the first half.

With under a minute left before halftime, things got weird.

The Patriots had lost Cowell to a leg injury and senior running back Kendyll Weaver as well. Lewis called on West’s best receiver, Aizjon Robinson, to fill in.

The senior was intercepted by strong safety Sirvantes Ferguson in West territory. He eluded a defender and looked to have an openinig for a return but he fumbled the football in mid-stride. West senior guard Jordan Currie recovered it not far from the original line of scrimmage. The Patriots had a new set of downs with :32 left before halftime.

West moved inside the Ike 20 and had a chance for a field goal but a bad snap ended the opportunity.

Despite not scoring before the break, Lewis sensed something.

“It kind of energized us. We went into the half a little, our dauber’s a little down, but it was just I saw something different in my players. They felt confident. They felt like we’re doing the right things.

Despite the mistakes, Lewis believed.

“We were able to see like we’re right there. We’re one away.”

The comeback would have to wait and the hole grew deeper.

Late in the third quarter, Ike sophomore Rico Watkins, who replaced the injured Anderson, had an 11-yard touchdown run with 3:38 left in the third to make it 15-3.

In the fourth quarter, Eisenhower quarterback Amir Jiles threw three interceptions to give West a shot and the Patriots took it.

Fields picked off an overthrown ball early in the quarter.

Behind big runs from senior Anthony Dupree, who replaced Weaver, moved West down the field. Dupree scored on a 1-yard run with 10:09 left.

Ike moved the ball near midfield and gave the ball away again. Fields picked off a pass near his own goalline and returned it to midfield with 7:06 left.

Now, it was Robinson’s turn. He reeled off a 19-yard run. Dupree moved it inside the 10 and Robinson ran it in from six yards to take a 16-15 lead. A 2-point conversion attempt failed with 3:51 left.

The Eagles got a good return, helped out by a dead ball penalty against West after the touchdown which backed up the kickoff. One final interception sealed the win for the Patriots, who ran out the clock.

UP NEXT

Next Thursday (Oct. 1), West travels to Choctaw, last year’s 6A-II runner-up in a 6A-II-1 contest.

On Friday, the Yellowjackets (3-2, 1-0) opened district play with a 35-12 win over Norman. The win over Norman was Choctaw’s first ever against the Tigers after going 0-16 entering the game.

“We feel like we can go to Choctaw and upset the world, shock the world pretty much,” Lewis said.
