MIDWEST CITY — By a slimmest margin, Putnam City West beat Putnam City North Saturday (Aug. 15) at the Midwest City Tournament.

Entering the tournament, West coach Tyler Thompson and the Patriots set a goal to be one of the top two teams in their pool to make the gold bracket.

West had a hard-fought loss to eventual tournament champ Mustang (where West had a competitive first set, losing 25-22) in their second match in a row,

In the Panthers and Patriots matchup, West won the first set, 25-19. North answered with a 27-25 victory in the second set. Tournament rules dictated only two sets and West won by point differential.

“The girls battled hard coming off that PCN game where I know they had some disappointment giving up that second set late after controlling most of the game. The girls knew they had to win both sets against Harding Charter Prep to advance to gold bracket and they did what they had to,” Thompson said via text.

After the Patriots downed Harding Charter Prep in straight sets, Classen S.A.S. knocked them out.

“We still have a lot to work on, but we are off to a good start on the season,” Thompson said. “We are a tough serving team. Our best stat lines will come from the pressure we put on the receiving team.”

Patriot junior Willow Hardway earned all-tournament team honors. Hardway averaged 1.8 Aces a game and 3.3 kills a game.

Zoe Salas led West in kills per game at 3.8 and assists per game at 4.8. Junior Kami Liles averaged 3.5 kills and 4 assists per contest.

The Panthers dropped matches to Mustang and host Midwest City.

West has some time off before hosting U.S. Grant on Aug. 25.

North hosts Santa Fe South Tuesday (Aug. 18) at 6 p.m.
