OKLAHOMA CITY — Putnam City amassed nearly 350 yards on the ground Thursday (Oct. 15) for a 54-26 win over rival Putnam City West in a sloppy and rainy 6A-II-1 contest.
While the contest was a blowout, it was a far cry from the Pirates’ record-setting 75-0 win over West last season.
“West is improving,” Putnam City coach Willis Alexander said. “They’ve got a lot to do with us playing sloppy.”
Both teams scored quickly to start the contest. PC freshman Kamarion Thomas set the tone by returning the opening kickoff 51 yards to the West 30-yard line. After three rushes by senior Kahmi Herrera, quarterback Daeveon Simmons capped off the drive with a 16-yard touchdown run.
West’s first drive went backwards on the first three plays. Facing a third down and long at the Patriot 3-yard line, senior quarterback Aizjon Robinson reeled off a 97-yard touchdown run. Robinson sprinted around the right, split defenders and outran everyone else down the middle of the field for the score and a 6-6 tie with 9:13 in the opening quarter.
One pattern emerged. The Pirates could run the ball and the Patriots were constantly dogged by penalties. PC had two 100-yard rushers and finished with 347 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. Herrera had 100 of that total on 13 carries.
Alexander credited his offensive line for the big numbers
“Where they go, we go.”
The Patriots, on the other hand, went the wrong way a lot with 15 penalties and 144 penalty yards.
In Putnam City’s second drive, two west penalties and a steady diet of junior Marcico Petties led to a touchdown in five plays. Again, it was Simmons to top it off, this time from 24 yards.

West’s Robinson kept his team in the game with his legs. He rushed for 35 yards on the next drive and senior Kendyll Weaver added a 20-yard run. Robinson’s 5-yard touchdown run tied the game at 12-12.
Original failed to convert a pair of 2-point conversions tries, spurred on by West penalties on the first two extra points attempts. The Patriots struggled with snaps on their extra points on the first two scores.
The back-and-forth continued with Herrera carrying the load on the ground and a pair of West penalties. Petties scored untouched through the West secondary for a 31-yard touchdown run and the Pirates’ lead was 19-12.
This time, the Patriots didn’t have an answer.
Due to penalties and a bad snap, the next West drive netted two yards and West turned the ball over on downs at the Patriot 22-yard line.
Putnam City stayed on the ground in the short field and Simmons scored for the third time with a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 9:54 left in the second quarter.
With West’s offense now stalled, Simmons went to the air and he connected with junior Remy George on a 33-yard strike. George’s defender fell and George sprinted down the Pirate sideline to make it 33-2 with 3:54 left before half.
To start the third quarter, West embarked on a 66-yard scoring drive. The Patriots stayed on the ground with a handful of backs in the Wildcat as Robinson was held out of the second half after being banged up.
West senior Anthony Dupree capped off the drive a 1-yard score.
That score was erased on the first play of the Pirates’ drive when PC’s Petties sprinted 70 yards down the Pirate sideline for a touchdown.
Original would get two more rushing touchdowns in the contest.
West tacked on one more score when Weaver ran around the right side and the Putnam City sideline for a 54-yard touchdown run with 8:35 left in the game for the final total.
With the win, the Pirates clinched the Putnam City school district football title for the third straight season. West last earned the title in 2023. Putnam City North hasn’t swept its sister schools since 2020.
More than the rivalry, Alexander stressed the importance of the district 6A-II-1 win, the Pirates’ third in a row after an 0-4 start.
Simmons was 6-of-11 passing for 86 yards a score. He also finished with 49 yards on the ground.
George’s 33-yard catch led all Pirate receivers. Senior Shawn Jones III had three catches for 32 yards.
WEST ‘CLOSING THE GAP’
Despite the miscues, West coach Rick Lewis said he sees progress.
“I hope people realize that the gap’s closing,” Lewis said. “West is not the old West. We a new West.”
Robinson’s completed two passes for five yards. But, he reeled off 138 yards on the ground on nine carries (all in the first half) with two scores.
While some might see a wide receiver trying to be quarterback, Lewis disagrees.
“He’s not your normal wide receiver. He’s just a great athlete,” Lewis said. “He can get it on all counts. He can throw the football, he can run the football. So all of our offense is still available to us.”
Weaver had 197 yards on the ground on 14 carries.
Senior Anthony Dupree had 14 tough rushing yards but he made his presence known on defense several hard hits and tackles.
“I mean, he’s one of those kids that no matter what the situation, you never feel like you’re out of it when you have an Anthony Dupree on your side.”
Lewis lobbied for Dupree to be considered for All-State honors.
“He’s just head and shoulders above everybody we’ve seen so far.”
