WARR ACRES — Putnam City recognized its senior class Thursday (Nov. 5) with a 34-14 win over old rival Midwest City at Pirate Stadium.

The Pirate defense scored off a turnover and forced the Bombers to turn the ball over on downs three times in the win.

The PC offense earned an early lead with two big drives. Original took the opening kickoff and marched 69 yards, capped off by senior quarterback Daveon Simmons connecting with junior Marcico Petties on a 34-yard touchdown pass.

The Bombers responded by driving into the Pirate red zone, directed by former PC quarterback Denymn Friday. A Midwest City personal foul penalty set them back and the Bombers turned the ball over on downs.

Early in the second quarter, senior Kahmi Herrera scored the first of his two rushing touchdowns on a one-yard run. The score topped off a 15-play, 86-yard drive.

The Bombers were struggling to move the ball when Friday fumbled. Pirate senior Jordan Billingslea scooped up the ball and returned it 27-yards for a touchdown.

Putnam City forced a punt on the ensuing possession, but a muffed punt set up Midwest City in Pirate territory. Junior Javontae Holmes scored from 22 yards out to make it 21-7.

The Pirates were forced to punt but another Bomber drive into PC territory died as they turned the ball over on downs.

Midwest City had a chance to cut the deficit to one score. The Bombers took the opening kickoff and drove inside the red zone. PC was flagged for two costly penalties to help Midwest City down the field.

Again, the drive ended on fourth down as a pass from Friday fell incomplete.

Herrera and Original went back to the ground for another scoring drive. Stopped on third down, Herrera sprinted into the end zone from nine yards out on fourth down. A missed extra point made it 27-7.

In the fourth quarter, Bomber backup quarterback Arin Easton directed a 12-play, 74-yard drive. The freshman tossed a five-yard touchdown pass to fellow freshman Adrian Grayson.

With reserves in the game, Pirate freshman Marshon Walker wrapped up the scoring with a 37-yard touchdown run.

The win marked the Pirates’ first victory over the Bombers since 2005 and broke an eight-game losing streak. The two schools hadn’t played since 2019 as the Bombers moved down to 5A. The Pirates and Bombers first played in 1946 and were fierce rivals in the old Mid-State Conference.

UP NEXT

Original’s completed its 6A-II-1 schedule last week with a 50-7 road win over Lawton Eisenhower.

The Pirates (5-5, 4-2) will watch the Putnam City North-Piedmont game with interest on Friday (Nov. 6) . If the Wildcats beat North, it would set up a three-way tie for second place which would be decided by district marginal points. Norman is +35, Piedmont is +24 and the Pirates are +2.

If the Panthers beat Piedmont, Putnam City would finish second and have a first-round bye in the playoffs. A Piedmont win would likely send the Pirates to fifth place and a first-round game on the road.

Norman (6-4, 4-2) finished the regular season with a 49-15 win over Putnam City West Thursday.
