Putnam City West

PIEDMONT — Putnam City West couldn’t convert early scoring opportunities and Piedmont scored quickly in a 56-7 win Friday (Oct. 30) in 6A-II-1 matchup.

The loss sank West (2-7, 1-4) to sixth in district play with only next week’s matchup at Norman left in the regular season. If the expected outcomes occur next week, the Patriots would be on the road in the first round of the playoffs.

The Wildcats’ win bolstered their chances at second place and a first-round playoff bye with only their matchup with Putnam City North left on the schedule.

Piedmont would win a possible 3-way tie with Putnam City and Norman. The Wildcats earned a tiebreaker with the Pirates because of their win earlier in the season. Norman holds the tiebreaker over Piedmont after a 20-14 win last Friday (Oct. 23).

West opened the game with a lengthy seven-minute drive with senior Kendyll Weaver converting a third down play with a 12-yard run. Senior receiver-turned-quarterback Aizjon Robinson added a 13-yard run for another first down.

On the next possession, a miscommunication on a handoff from Robinson to Weaver resulted in a lost fumble.

On the next play, sophomore Maddux Caram connected with junior King Underwood for a 26-yard touchdown.

The Wildcats’ run-heavy offense scored quickly in the second quarter while West kept stalling on offense despite have significantly more snaps.

The Wildcats marched down the field to open the second half, the first of four straight scores while the Patriots couldn’t move the ball.

Trailing 49-0, West had a nine-play, 52-yard scoring drive that took over six and a half minutes. Robinson scored from 13 yards out to breakt the shutout.

Both Robinson and Weaver each finished with 84 yards on the ground in the loss.
