BETHANY — Elgin used two Bethany turnovers late in the second quarter to turn a close game into a 42-0 rout Friday (Aug. 28).
The Owls, now in 5A, had a 7-0 lead late in the second quarter. The Bronchos had the ball at the Elgin 42-yard line. Senior quarterback Brody McLaren couldn’t escape defensive pressure and fumbled. Elgin senior defensive end Tucker New-Henson picked the ball up and rumbled 44 yards for a touchdown.
Just 12 seconds later, a tipped pass ended up in the arms of Elgin senior Tucker New-Henson. The 7-0 lead had ballooned to 21-0 just before halftime.
The Bronchos made it across midfield in the final minute before the intermission but an intentional grounding penalty ended the scoring opportunity.
In the third quarter, Elgin scored two more times on touchdown passes from senior quarterback Cayden Belletto.
For the game, the Bronchos were held to 68 yards of total offense.

The Bronchos travel to 3A Jones next Friday (Sept. 4) at 7 p.m.
On Thursday, the Longhorns fell to 2A-I Lincoln Christian, 25-13.
Last season, Bethany lost a 43-19 contest to Jones. The Longhorns went on to win the 2A-I state title.
