Bethany Bronchos

BETHANY — After holding 5A Guthrie scoreless for almost the entire first half, Bethany struggled in the second half in a 28-0 loss Friday (Sept. 11).

Despite the shutout, the Bronchos had scoring opportunities.

Late in the first quarter, Bethany reached the Guthrie 20-yard line but freshmen Gunner Chesney was stopped short on fourth down to end the drive.

The Bronchos moved across midfield with 9:40 left in the second quarter but a sack ended the threat and led to a punt. Five minutes later, a Chesney catch and roughing-the-passer penalty on Guthrie helped Bethany move into Bluejay territory but a sack caused the drive to stall.

With 45 seconds before halftime, Guthrie finally broke through on a 15-yard touchdown run around the edge by senior Skylor Scamman.

The Bronchos got the ball to start the second half with a 7-0 deficit.

On the second play from scrimmage, Broncho senior Brody McLaren was intercepted by Guthrie senior Cason Hays, who returned it to the Bethany 22. The Blue Jays scored seven plays later for a 14-0 lead in the third quarter.

Bethany had another promising drive in the fourth quarter, reaching midfield but had to punt.

Friday’s meeting was the first between the two schools.

The loss also marked the Bronchos’ first 0-3 start since Bethany went 0-10 in 1997.
