When Western Heights football coach Jarvis Pitts steps on the sideline in Woodward Thursday (Aug. 27), he’ll be a familiar face in a new role.
After three years as an assistant and offensive coordinator with the Jets (under three different head coaches), Pitts takes over the head role from Mark Ryan, who left for the head job at Class A-II Drumright.
The challenge is the same — to make the school competitive in football.
The squad was 0-10 last season and won one game in 2024.
“Western Heights enters a new era,” Pitts said in the preseason questionnaire. “Our goal is to establish a positive hard working culture, create excitement in the fanbase as well as school and that positive steps to having a good season.”
In his first stint at the school, Ryan was the last coach to finish the season over .500 with an 8-3 record in 2007 which included a playoff appearance.
In 2026, Pitts has some returners he feels will make an impact including seniors Triston Young (WR/DB – 6’2″), Efren Flores (OL/DL – 5’10″), sophomores Nate Le’Vere (TE/DE – 5’10″) and DeQuone Mosley (WR/DB 5’9″).
Sophomore Michael Doh II (WR/DB – 5’7″) is a newcomer for the Jets, coming over from 6A Yukon.
Western Heights makes the move down to 4A after the last two years in 5A. Prior to that, Western Heights played two seasons as an independent while trying to rebuild the program.
In 5A-2, the Jets dealt with a challenging schedule including perennial state champion Carl Albert.
Besides their independent stint, the Jets have been a 5A football school since moving up from 4A in 1992.
Ardmore will be in 4A-2 with the Jets. The Tigers (8-4) lost to Cushing in the quarterfinals last season. Blanchard (5-6) fell to Weatherford in the first round. Bridge Creek (1-9) missed the playoffs. Chickasha (2-8) also missed the playoffs. Harrah (6-4) made some noise late in the season before their losing their final two games to miss the playoffs. Tecumseh (3-7) also missed the playoffs. Tuttle (14-0) won the state championship.
