OKLAHOMA CITY — Bethany’s girls soccer team captured their second straight 4A state championship with a 4-2 win over Oklahoma Christian School Saturday (May 16) at Taft Stadium.

Junior Camryn Regier scored three goals and the Bronchos built an early lead to upend the previously unbeaten Saints.

“Super proud of this group,” Bethany coach Sean Williams said via phone.”It’s tough to go back-to-back.”

After a 1-0 win over Holland Hall in last season, the Bronchos had a tough task against OCS, who had steamrolled their opponents.

The Saints (13-1) had only given up three goals all season and were 14-0 entering the final match. Bethany (16-3) scored two goals by halftime, both from Regier.

OCS tried to answer but had a goal waved off due to an offsides infraction.

The lead ballooned to 4-0 in the second half as Regier struck again, assisted by sophomore Jozzy Hernandez.

Hernandez got in the action for the final score, which was fed by a pass from Regier.

Williams preaches for his teams to start fast and score in the first five minutes. While they didn’t score that early, Williams said the early lead set the tone as he emphasizes – especially in a state championship match.

“Especially in a final to create momentum and to score first creates doubt (for the other team),” Williams said.

The second goal before halftime increased the pressure on the Saints.

OCS finally got on the scoreboard nearly midway through the second half on a goal from sophomore Rylie Eldridge. Their second goal came with 8:30 left on a score from sophomore Finley Curran, but it wasn’t nearly enough.

The Bronchos drained the clock by keeping possession of the ball througout the second half en route to the school’s second state title in girls soccer.

Williams said his team’s experience was key.

“All season long in in a lot of the big games, the experience from last year bled through in a lot of moments. But you still have to do it. when it matters.”

The heat was a factor as well as strong winds, but Williams didn’t see it faze his team.

“When you deal with high school kids, you wonder, how’s this day gonna look?

“I’ve envisioned I envisioned this performance. But, that’s just a coach who loves his girls, who wants them to win and believes in them. For them to go out and and exceed and, and, you know, jump out to a 4-0 lead and a final was incredible.”

Regier hat trick performances came after a scoreless performance Tuesday against Metro Christian, where constant defensive pressure kept her from scoring but opened up opportunities for others.

“She was frustrated and and disappointed that some of her shots that she did get didn’t finish (against Metro Christian),” Williams said. “I think that just fuels her and motivates her.”

OCS’ scheme wasn’t as effective Saturday.

“It allowed her to move and create some space and move some players out of position. I thought she just capitalized on on the moments that she got.”

The three-goal performance gave Reiger 52 for the season, one shy of her 53-goal performance last year.
