
TULSA — Bethany used a second half comeback to tie Metro Christian and win with penalty kicks in extra time for 3-2 win Tuesday (May 12) in the 4A state semifinals.
Sophomore Jozzy Hernandez scored both goals in regulation. Hernandez scored on a corner kick with 37:20 left in the first half.
Metro Christian junior Maggie Chandler tied the game at 17:41 with a free kick. Chandler added a penalty kick before halftime to get the Patriots a 2-1 lead.
Hernandez struck again at with 20:10 left in regulation to tie the match.
After two scoreless overtime periods, the Bronchos won the shootout, 4-2. Senior Korbyn Baker, Hernandez, junior Camryn Regier and sophomore Jocelyn Balderas each connected on penalty kicks. Metro Christian only hit on two with sophomore goalkeeper Camdyn Konz recorded two crucial saves to help seal the win.
“I think any championship run you have to fight through adversity,” Bethany coach Sean WIlliams said via text. “It was important for us to show our grit and determination and find away to win, especially when you have to play on the road in a hostile environment.
“We did a great job of playing attacking-minded soccer in the second half and were calm and poised in the most important moments.”
The Patriots focused on stopping Regier but Hernandez’s goals kept Bethany in the game.
Broncho defenders, including Baker, freshman Evie Pipkin, senior Ellen Smith and freshman Avin Smith denied the Patriots several times.

Bethany (15-3) meets Oklahoma Christian School (13-0) Saturday at 1 p.m. at Taft Stadium in Oklahoma City for the 4A title.
OCS earned a 3-0 shutout of Catoosa Tuesday to advance. The Saints haven’t given up a goal since a 2-1 win over Catoosa on April 10.
Since then, OCS has outscored their opponents 14-0 in their last six contests.
