OKLAHOMA CITY — Putnam City North’s senior trio of Kiana Gray, Jayla Constant and Da’Nae Jefferson have done a lot of things in their high school basketball career.
Constant and Jefferson won a state title at Putnam City West as sophomores before playing at Grind Prep last season. Gray has won two state championships, one with Putnam City West (with Constant and Jefferson) and one with North last season.
But Thursday’s blowout win over Northwest Classen marked the first time their squad reached the 100-point mark in a 101-5 rout to open Regional 1 of the Class 6A East playoffs.
As expected over an overmatched opponent, the defense was suffocating (The Panthers had 26 steals and the Knights had a slew of other turnovers) and top-ranked North (25-1) piled on the points, leading 53-0 at halftime.
Panthers coach Logan Martin cycled through everyone on the bench as the running clock started in the second quarter but the Panthers made everything difficult for the visitors, who finished the season at 2-20.
It wasn’t until the fourth quarter when Northwest Classen senior Nina Ochoa hit two free throws to get the Knights on the scoreboard.
Gray admits that the players wanted to finally get to triple digits even if their coach wasn’t pushing for it.
“She wanted us to get it, but she also want to get everybody else a chance to play since it was like such a blowout,” Gray said.
Martin smiled sheepishly when asked about the point total. She said it was tough because no one wants to embarrass the opponent but her squad wanted to reach the mark.
“That was one of their goals,” Martin said.
North had broken the 90-point mark twice this season, including a 94-33 win over Edmond Santa Fe on Jan. 20 and a 90-7 rout of rival Putnam City last Friday.
Panther freshman Kya Moore scored a bucket to make it 90-2 but the running clock made it tougher to reach the goal.
Northwest Classen junior Kamiah Coleman scored a bucket and drew a foul with 3:18 left. The clock kept ticking as she hit the free throw and it was 90-5.
Junior Laila Willoby scored the second of her two buckets from off the bench to make it 92-5.
Gray added a bucket and the Knights called timeout with 55 seconds left with a 94-5 score.
Following the timeout, North kept the Knights from reaching midcourt with an urgency you mostly see in a fourth quarter comeback attempt. Gray drained a 3-pointer and then scored another bucket.
After another steal, Constant scored on a layup with less than 10 seconds remaining for the final score.
Gray scored a game-high 21 points, including seven points in the final quarter. She hit three 3-pointers, grabbed two rebounds, had an assist and three steals.
Jefferson followed with 19 points, five rebounds and two steals. Constant added 16 points, two rebounds, six assists and nine steals.
In all, five players scored in double figures for North.
Senior Tehlia Kutsoati scored 13 points with three 3-pointers. Kutsoati added two rebounds and five steals.
Williams added 11 points. She had three treys, three rebounds and three assists.
“She shot the ball well early,” Martin said of Williams. “She’s one of our most consistent shooters so that’s good to see.”
PLENTY OF PLAYOFF EXPERIENCE
Martin has five players that were on the roster on last year’s North state title team. Add state tournament experience from Constant, Jefferson, senior Paige Williams and Makiya Moore (both last season at 5A Classen SAS). Junior Laila Willoby also played for Deer Creek, who reached the area playoffs last season.
Martin said her team benefits from the “maturity and experience factor.”
“They know what it’s all about, and they’ve been in that moment, and the first time you’re in that moment, it can be a little nerve-wracking.
“Since they’ve been there, they know how to handle it. They know what to expect.”
Gray said she expects that to impact the playoff newbies.
“I think that they’re gonna look up to us and see that we’re not nervous, and there’s nothing to be scared about, just when you get on the court, go out there and play your game.”

UP NEXT
The Panthers (25-1) play for the Regional 1 championship Saturday (Feb. 28) at 3:30 p.m. at North. They’ll meet Stillwater, who beat Enid, 49-23 in the second game at North on Thursday.
North has a 56-33 road win over the Pioneers on Jan. 31 and a 57-36 home win on Dec. 9, both in 6A-3 play.
