WARR ACRES — Putnam City West swept the season series with sister school Putnam City with a 15-6 rout Saturday (April 12) at the Northwest Optimist Tournament.

Putnam City West coach Grason Wright was pleased that his squad rebounded after an extra-inning loss to the OKC Mets Friday in the tournament. The Patriots had runners in scoring position but were unable to mount a comeback.

“It’s hard to bounce back from games like that specially in extra innings and I’m proud of the way the boys came out and played,” Wright said via text.

West (5-13) jumped out to an 11-1 lead after two innings. The Patriots collected eight hits in a seven-run second inning.

Wright highlighted freshman Malachi Ferguson, who struggled in extra innings Friday. On Saturday, Ferguson went 1-for-1 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. He was hit by a pitch twice and had a sacrifice fly.

Senior Luis Enriquez was 2-for-2, scoring three times and driving in two runs. Fellow senior Nathan Vann finished 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs.

Senior Cadence Smith added a 2-for-3 day with an RBI.

On the mound, Smith earned the win, pitching four innings. He scattered five hits. Of the six runs he allowed, only two were earned due to three West errors. Smith walked five batters and struck out five.

“Cadence Smith did his job on the mound and we had a couple timely hits that pulled us through for the win,” Wright said.

The Patriots stole 10 bases (four by Vann) in the win. West hitters were also hit seven times.

Putnam City sophomore Bryson Vanover led off a four-run third inning for the Pirates with a homer over the left field wall.

Vanover went 2-for-4 and also had a double. He scored twice and drove in two runs.

Senior Connor Fast was 2-for-4 as well and he scored a run.

Vanover took the loss after pitching two innings. He allowed 11 hits and 11 runs (nine earned). He walked two batters and struck out one.
