
LANCASTER, Texas — Putnam City West got 28 points from DJ Carter in a 71-64 win over Arlington Sam Houston (Texas) Saturday (Dec. 28) in the final day of the Snoop Johnson In Season Showcase.
The junior hit 8-of-17 from the field including 4-of-10 from the 3-point line. Carter also had four assists and two steals in the win.
“He’s been our best player all year,” Putnam City West coach Brian Booker said of Carter via text. “He’s finally starting to grow into his leadership role. He had a very good weekend against some very physical teams.
“I think he’s only going to get better as the year goes on.”
After trailing 19-16 after one quarter, West outscored the Texans 25-8 in the second quarter. The Patriots shot 57.1 percent in both the second and fourth quarter.
Freshman Scyon Wilborn added 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting (3-of-4 from beyond the arc). Wilborn had six assists and three rounds.
Jordan Kariuki scored 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting. The senior had four steals for the Patriots.
Sophomore Damari Gilstrap had eight points and five rebounds and Damari Coleman had six points.
Senior Antonio Anderson followed with five points and eight rebounds.
UP NEXT
The Patriots (3-5, 2-1 in district play) return to action Jan. 7 at Owasso (8-3, 2-0) in a 6A-3 contest. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.
The Rams beat 3A’s top-team, Millwood, 53-47, Saturday (Dec. 28) to win the Tournament of Champions in Tulsa.
