EDMOND – Putnam City West gave up a four-run lead to Mustang Thursday (May 2) as the Broncos walked off to a 12-11 win, eliminating the Patriots in the Class 6A West Regional 1 at Edmond Santa Fe.
The Broncos (24-13) sprinted out to a 5-0 first inning lead. The Patriots (15-17) answered with five runs of their own with two outs in the top of the second inning. West collected five hits, including doubles from seniors Kevin Saucedo and Sam Hernandez.
West took a 6-5 lead in the third inning on an RBI-single from freshman Aaron De Loera which scored Saucedo.
The Patriots added two more runs in the fourth after a 1-out walk by senior Jaxon Hyde-Herrera. Junior Nathan Vann added a single and Hyde-Herrera scored on an error. Sophomore Jayvn Mitchell singled to left field and Vann scored to give West an 8-5 lead.
The Patriots made it 9-5 in the sixth inning. Hernandez led the inning off with a double to left field and scored on a Vann single.
Mustang finally answered in the bottom half of the sixth, scoring three runs on three singles and a hit batsemen to cut the West lead to 9-8.
West extended the lead to 11-8 in the top of the seventh. Freshman Alex Jiminez led off with a walk. De Loera moved Jiminez to second on a sacrifice bunt. Senior John Rolling followed with a walk. Sam Hernandez singled to center field, scoring Jiminez. During the next at-bat, Rolling stole home.
Mustang sophomore Kamden Mantooh led off the bottom of the seven inning with a walk. Fellow sophomore Nate Sutton followed with a single. Junior Blaine Fulmer doubled Mantooth home. Senior Maddox Lawson grounded out to first, scoring Sutton. Senior Carlos Lopez scored Fulmer with a single to tie the game at 11-11.
Senior Jackson Pickelsimer walked and West intentionally walked senior Jake Blice to load the bases.
Sophomore Wyatt Williamson singled to left field, driving in the winning run for the Broncos.
Sam Hernandez finished 3-for-5. Vann, Mitchell, Saucedo, Jiminez and De Loera each had two hits for West, who outhit Mustang 16-11.
Vann took a no-decision, striking out seven batters in five innings.
