WARR ACRES – A slow start for Putnam City and the size of 7-foot-2 Union senior Erik Madrid were too much for the Pirates as they dropped a 68-40 Class 6A District 3 contest Friday (Feb. 9).
Union (20-2, 12-1) sprinted out to an 13-0 lead. The Pirates (8-14, 4-9) didn’t score until the 1:10 mark in the first quarter when junior JaColby Williams’ jumper got PC on the board.
From there, the Pirates could only play catch-up
Madrid, the senior who officially signed with Oklahoma Baptist Wednesday, commanded the Pirates’ attention down low, but he scored 19 points and made a difference on the glass as well. Union junior Korbin Gunn added 17 points. Union’s other big man, sophomore Miles Flemons added eight points.
Williams led PC with 16 points. Junior D.J. Stephens added 13 points.
UP NEXT: The Pirates finish the regular season on the road at Enid Tuesday (Feb. 13) against the Plainsmen. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
