OKLAHOMA CITY – Edmond Santa Fe held off Putnam City West, 53-44, Friday (Feb. 9), limiting West junior forward Kaidon Rayfield to four points in a Class 6A District 2 contest.
The Patriots (9-12, 7-6) fell behind early as the Huskies (12-8, 8-5) sprinted out with a 9-0 start and led 17-5 after one quarter. West was able to cut the deficit some over the next two quarters and had a chance to make a run in the final period.
Sophomore Nate Muriithi cut the deficit to five points with 2:51 with a bucket and a free throw. Santa Fe’s Zayden Best countered with two free throws. Rayfield fouled out with 1:26 left after grabbing a rebound. That put Santa Fe in the bonus and they hit free throws down the stretch.
On the last play of the game, things got chippy. That spilled over to pushing and shoving between the teams when the teams were shaking hands.
Rayfield’s four points were way below his average of 15 points a game. He didn’t score in the second half. Rayfield scored a bucket in the first quarter and went 2-for-4 from the free throw line in the second quarter.
The Patriots’ Muriithi finished with 12 points and Fudge Gilstrap added 11 points.
Santa Fe’s Tyler Williams scored a game-high 16 points with nine of those points in the fourth quarter.
