TULSA – Putnam City West ended Edmond North’s 47-game winning streak with a 47-45 win over the Lady Huskies Saturday in the championship game of the Jenks/Union Invitational Tournament at the Union Multipurpose Activity Center.
Sophomore Kiana Gray hit the game-winning shot, a contested layup, with :05 left. After a timeout, junior Jazzlin Brown intercepted Edmond North’s crosscourt pass near mid-court to seal the win.
The Lady Huskies last lost a game Feb. 12, 2022 against Class 4A’s Classen SAS. The streak is the second-longest in Class 6A girls basketball. During the streak, West fell to Edmond North by three points in the state semifinals last March.
For Putnam City West coach Ja’Ron Jefferson the streak took a back seat to the fact Edmond North is the two-time defending state champions in Class 6A.
“I believe everybody wants to beat them, not just us,” Jefferson said. “Whenever you’re at the top, everybody wants to beat whoever is at the top.”
The game could be a preview of a state final matchup in Class 6A this year.
“It’s a good win for us, but it’s just a measure and stick of what we need to do. to be better when or if we see them again,” Jefferson said.
The Lady Patriots (16-0) were in control in the first half, taking a 35-16 lead to the locker room at halftime. Edmond North (11-1) dominated the third quarter, outscoring West 12-3 to cut the lead to ten points.
Foul trouble and missed free throws plagued West and by 3:25 in the fourth quarter, Edmond North tied the game on a jumper from senior Alison Heathcock. That set up the chaotic final minutes.
The game was tied at 43 when sophomore Brennen Bert intercepted a pass and took it the other way for a bucket to give West a 45-43 lead. The Lady Huskies would tie the game on a jumper by senior Kate Melton.
That set up Gray’s shot and Brown’s steal to give the Lady Patriots the win.
Senior Shamar Bert was named to the All-Tournament team and fellow senior Caya Smith was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
