JONES — Another week, another Bethany opponent near the top or in this case, at the top of their class.
After losing a 42-0 contest to 4A runner-up Elgin last week, the Bronchos were throttled 53-6 Friday (Sept. 4) by 2A-1 state champ (now in 3A) Jones.
The Longhorns (1-1) sprinted out to a 18-0 lead in the second quarter, Bethany avoided the shutout with some help from the defense.
Senior linebacker Tristan Garrett picked off Jones sophomore quarterback Jeymon Reed and returned it to the Longhorn 19.
The Bronchos didn’t waste the opportunity.
Bethany senior quarter Brody McLaren lofted to the right corner near the goal line. Senior Eli Mars came back to the ball under tight coverage and spun around across the goal line for Bethany’s lone score.
Reed, the high-profile recruit, threw for four touchdowns and rushed for another one in the rout.
UP NEXT
Bethany’s rugged non-district slate continues next Friday (Sept. 11) at home against 5A Guthrie (0-2).
The Bluejays were 8-3 a year ago. Guthrie opened this season with a 42-7 loss to 4A champion Tuttle and a 38-10 defeat to 4A runner-up Elgin.
