WARR ACRES — Putnam City North scored 10 runs in the third inning for a 15-4 rout of sister school Putnam City at the Northwest Optimist Darrel Palmer Classic Saturday (April 11).
“It was solid win. It was good to see our guys bounce back from a tough game yesterday,” Putnam City North coach Greg Johnson said via text.
North built a 5-0 lead and then exploded for 10 runs keyed by a three-run home run from senior Xavier Sarkey over the left field wall.
Senior Xayvion Jones added a 3-for-4 day with a double, a triple, two stolen bases and three runs scored.
“Jones and sarkey both are starting to hit like we knew they could,” Johnson said.
Senior Gavin Lang and Alfredo Renteria each had two hits. Renteria had a triple.
On the mound, Renteria allowed four hits over four innings. He walked four walks and seven strikeouts.
“Renteria threw well and for the most part stayed in the zone,” Johnson said.
“Hoping we will take this into next week and have a good stretch,” Johnson said.
Senior JaQuari Dansby, freshman. Jensen Scheffe, senior Reece Hubble and junior Devin Orton each had hits. Orton had a double.
PIRATES STAYING COMPETITIVE
The loss continued a tough stretch for the Pirates, who have lost five straight games and gave up a late lead to Bethany the day before.
Putnam City coach Joseph Wood is happy to see his players continue to compete.
“The idea that we just try to teach them is be competitive and just try to get hot at the right time,” Wood said. “With Oklahoma, everybody makes the playoffs and you go and just try to be competitive, try to put out a product that you be proud of.”
The Pirates avoided a shutout in the fourth inning. Junior Chase Guethle sprinted to third base on a fly ball error to lead off the inning. He later scored on a groundout. PC got three straight walks as freshman Dylan Grigsby, senior Justin Knight and senior Brandon Bennett all got free passes for another run.
Senior Henry Thein singled in a run and junior Jared Potter doubled in another run.
Junior Judd Quanstrom and sophomore Caden Goodwin also had hits in the loss.
Wood also praised Bennett for making a temporary move from the outfield to catcher as junior Bryson Vanover was out. Wood said Bennett hadn’t caught in about a year and a half.
