Putnam City has a new baseball coach as the Pirates strive for their first winning season since 2016.

Putnam City alum Joseph Wood returns to Warr Acres after coaching stints at Frederick, Snyder and Hollis. Wood, a 1998 Pirate graduate, also coached softball at Putnam City West and Santa Fe South.

“The main focus for this season is to be competitive and play with a purpose,” Wood told West Metro Sports in a preseason questionnaire. “We focus on team culture and character by doing off the field activities. The players have really bought in to the process of working hard for something and we are really excited to show everyone the new standard of Pirate baseball and what we are building.”

Wood will have several veterans on his team including senior shortstop Connor Fast, senior utility player and pitcher Andrew Simon, senior second baseman Lukas Poindexter, senior outfielder JT Twillie, junior outfielder Brandon Bennett and junior first baseman Henry Thein.

Newcomers include senior utility player Henry Plata, sophomore third baseman Jared Potter, sophomore catcher Bryson Vanover, freshman outfielder MJ Petties, freshman outfielder Caden Goodwin and freshman outfielder Damon Hopkins.

Wood’s faith is central to him in coaching the Pirates.

“Everything we do on and off the field is driven by our faith in Christ. The story is already written and we have won through our faith.”
