We Cover the Jets. West Metro Sports

Western Heights baseball coach Stephen Smitherman sees his squad improving as he begins his fourth year as the head coach.

“Each of the last three years, the team has improved,” Smitherman told West Metro Sports via a preseason questionnaire. “We here at ‘The Heights’ are looking to have one of the best years Western Heights has had in baseball in over 20 plus years.”

In Smitherman’s first season (2022), the Jets finished 0-14. Since then, Western Heights won seven games in 2023 and went 9-18 a season ago, finishing third in the All-City Athletic Conference tournament.

Smitherman will have returners in seniors Jacob Bohnstedt, Ami Avelar, Israel Lopez, Kole Schrock and junior Keziah Howell.

“Newcomers will play a large part of the rebuilding of Western Heights baseball program,” Smitherman said. “It has been a work in progress. Looking forward to this year’s progress.”

Newcomers include senior Caden Wiebusch and junior Akintola Aguillard.

Wiebusch joins the Jets from 6A Piedmont and has committed to play for Randall University. Aguillard was at Classen S.A.S.
