EDMOND — Putnam City North overcame a slow start and held on for a 57-50 win over Edmond Santa Fe to finish the regular season Monday (Feb. 17) in a 6A-2 matchup.
The Wolves stormed back late in the fourth quarter and trailed 51-48 when a steal at midcourt turned into a bucket for sophomore DeWayne McKinney.
However, North junior TJ McNeely hit the floor while defending the shot and drew the offensive foul.
Santa Fe got the ball back and McKinney laid it off the glass and in with 34 seconds left with McNeely picking up the foul. McKinney missed the free throw and North led, 51-50.
From there, the Panthers pulled away with free throws by sophomore Mekhi Thomas and a fast break bucket by junior Malakye Schoats.
A hard foul on the shot gave Schoats more free throws to seal the win for North.
Senior Anthony Leonard led the Panthers with 14 points, including eight points in the second quarter. Thomas had 13 points with five of those points in the fourth quarter.
Schoats followed with nine points in the win.
