ALTUS – Western Heights struggled early and Altus sprinted out to a big first half en route to a 49-0 rout of the Jets Friday (Oct. 4) in a 5A-2 contest.

Altus scored on the first drive with a big play when Cole Osborne caught 63-yard pass from senior Brodie Rogers.

After the opening score, Western Heights drove to midfield then Jet senior Elyn McGilbra was intercepted by Altus freshman Zayden Glatzer. Altus took advantage with a 51-yard touchdown run by Bulldog junior DJ Wilson.

The rout was on as Altus scored four more times before halftime.

Rogers finished 118 passing yards and three touchdowns.

“Every game this season is going to be a challenge both mentally and physically. We are a young team that is learning to fight the mental battle and develop character,” Western Heights coach Travis Burdine said via text. “Once we have that battle learned, we can start to fight the physical battle.”

Burdine said he is emphasizing mental toughness with his squad.

“Once we got that, our physical play will come along,” Burdine said.
