
WARR ACRES – Putnam City sophomore Tessa Goodner tripled in two runs in the sixth inning to complete a comeback 7-6 win over Union Monday (Sept. 9) in a 6A-3 contest.
Putnam City coach Brooklyn Sparkman said her squad had “timely hitting and produced something 1 through 9. Great team win!”
The Lady Pirates trailed 6-3 entering the bottom of the sixth. With one out, sophomore Natalie Luevano was hit by a pitch. Fellow sophomore Addison Grier followed by doubling to center, scoring Grier. Sophomore Maece Bourbonnais doubled to left, scoring Grier to make it 6-5.
Sophomore Samantha Tidmore laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving Bourbonnais to third. Tidmore reached first base on an error.
That brought up Goodner, who had homered in the previous inning.
Goodner tripled and thought she had homered again. She was tagged out at third base while jogging to the base. However, the triple scored Bourbonnais and Tidmore to give Putnam City an 7-6 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Bourbonnais worked around a two-out single to seal the win.
The Lady Pirates took its first lead in the second inning.With one out, Tidmore was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Madi Gossman doubled. Singles by sophomores Francis Meza and Alexandra Hatlelid made it 2-1, Original.
It stayed that way until the the next inning when Union used three singles, a sacrifice bunt and a PC error to score four runs and take a 5-2 lead.
In the fifth inning, Goodner hit the first pitch she saw over the center field wall for a two-out home run to make it 5-3.
In the top of the sixth, Union got the run back, helped out by another Lady Pirate error.
“We went in with the mindset of trying to only play the game inning by inning. WIN the INNING!” Sparkman said. “And, we won every inning besides the third.”
Bourbonnais scattered four hits and gave up only one earned run. The sophomore struck out five batters.
“Maece was an absolute dawg in the circle, switching up her mindset and challenging hitters to swing at her stuff,” Sparkman said.
Putnam City had 11 hits and earned its first district win in four years.
“We knew that if we were going to get the outcome we wanted we had to switch something up,” Sparkman said. “Multiple people stepped up in a big way!”
Gossman finished 3-for-4 oon the day. Bourbonnais was 2-for-4 and Goodener also was 2-for-4. Meza finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
