PONCA CITY – Putnam City fell to Ponca City, 1-0, as both teams turned in big pitching performances Saturday (April 27) to close out the regular season.

The Pirates (6-23) mustered only three baserunners against Wildcat senior Colton Jones, with one hit, one walk and a hit batsmen. Jones struck out 13 batters for the complete-game win.

Senior Josh Potter collected Putnam City’s only hit, a one-out single to center field in the second inning. In the fifth inning, sophomore Henry Thein fell behind in the count, 0-2, but worked a full-count walk with two outs in the inning.

The Pirates’ final baserunner came with one out in the seventh when senior Hunter Andrews was hit by a pitch. Jones struck out Josh Potter and senior Connor Bennett to close out the win.

Ponca City (11-24) got its lone run in the second when Pirate senior Avery Stewart hit Wildcat senior Teegan Hodgson and walked Tucker Ewing to lead off the inning. Luke Bohan popped out to Andrews at first, who doubled off Ewing for a double play. Hodgson scored the only run of the game.

Stewart threw a complete game, giving up a first inning single to senior Aidan Howard, walking three batters and striking out eight.

UP NEXT: The Pirates face Westmoore (18-16) in the first round of Class 6A Regional 2 at Edmond North Thursday (May 2) at 1:30 p.m.
