WARR ACRES – Putnam City overcame a slow start, but couldn’t overcome a poor third quarter, losing in a rout to Norman North, 54-30, Friday night (Jan. 5) in the semifinals of the boys bracket at the Putnam City Invitational.

The Timberwolves (6-4) started fast, with a 7-0 run in the first quarter. After a timeout, Putnam City answered, as senior Ben Thompson hit a 3-pointer and a bucket to pull the Pirates within two points. Norman North pulled away again but the Pirates stayed close, only trailing by five halftime, 21-16.

Putnam City (4-6) was outscored, 20-7, in the third quarter, to sink the Pirates’ chances at a comeback.

Thompson led the Pirates with 12 points, including two 3-pointers. Kelton Locke added five points.

Norman North got 12 points from Drew Morris on four treys. Monte Hines added 10 points (eight of which came in the third quarter).

The Panthers rebounded from their opening night loss to rival Putnam City behind 17 points from Khai Brown, including two treys, and 15 from freshman Mekhi Thomas.

North (6-7) used a strong second quarter to take the lead after Northwest Classen (4-6) had an early lead.

The Patriots have now lost three straight after the loss to the Wolverines.

West (5-7) held a comfortable 33-21 lead at halftime but struggled in the second half, giving up 13 points to the Knights’ Pene Vasgote in the fourth quarter (his total for the game).

Patriot junior Kaidon Rayfield scored a game-high 19 points in the loss, with two treys. Rayfield went-7-for-10 from the free throw line, but was held to five points in the second half. Senior forward JJ Wilson added 13 points.
