OKLAHOMA CITY — Western Heights rolled to a 32-12 homecoming win over Capitol Hill Friday (Sept. 18).

The victory marked the first time since 2019 that the Jets have won two games in a row. That season, Western Heights opened the season at 3-0 but won only one district 5A-1 game and finished 4-6.

The Jets also broke the 30-point barrier for the first time since 2019 when Western Heights notched a 34-13 win over Guymon and a 39-16 win over Southeast. Since then, the Jets’ closest total to the 30-point mark came in 2022 with a a 45-28 loss to Christian Heritage.

Western Heights coach Jarvis was pleased to see his team put some points on the scoreboard.

“These kids are starting to understand that they can compete,” Pitt said. “As we get into our district, we’re going to have to score points to keep up with these great teams in the district.

“Now that these guys started to build a little confidence, they know that the things that we preach into them matters, and that they can actually accomplish their goals, too.”

Senior Triston Young opened the game by returning the opening kickoff to the Capitol Hill 7-yard line. Sophomore quarterback Jamel Smith scored on the next play from seven yards out.

Pitts praised Young, known as T.Y.

“He’s just set the tone for us, man. The kid’s been awesome all four years. He’s just been a great ambassador for this program.”

Young, who was named Homecoming King at halftime, also made an impact on defense. The Red Wolves scored in the first quarter and later had the football in their own territory.

Young sacked Capitol Hill quarterback Christian Guerrero with a crushing blow on a stunt from his position in the defensive backfield. The Red Wolves kept going backwards after the play. The Jets took over at the 1-yard line and freshman quarterback Christian Conde added a touchdown to extend the lead to 13-6 with 9:04 left in the second quarter.

Capitol Hill turned the ball over on the next possession and the Jets capitalized and went on a 10-pay drive.

Conde connected with Young for a 30-yard touchdown pass to make it 20-6 just before halftime.

To start the third quarter, the Jets recovered another Capitol Hill fumble with junior David Lewis grabbing the ball. The Jets moved quickly with two jet sweep runs and a big catch from sophomore Michael Doh.

Senior Kamden Morrow ran it in from seven yards out and Western Heights had a 26-6 lead.

Just before the end of the third quarter, the Jets scored for the final time. Young snagged a 35-yard completion to start the drive. Smith finished the drive with a 10-yard score.

Western Heights had four running backs combine for 171 yards on the ground. Lewis led the group with six rushes for 53 yards.

“We’re going to have to get our run to set up our pass. We do have some talented quarterbacks and we have some talented receivers on the outside, but we’re gonna have to be able to run the ball to open it.”

Smith and Conde combined for 102 yards passing in the win.

UP NEXT

The Jets meet winless Blanchard (0-3) next Friday (Sept. 25) at 7 p.m. to open up 4A-2 play.

On Friday, the Lions were blown out by 5A Guthrie, 49-7.

Blanchard had a down season last year at 5-6 but made it to the second round of the playoffs. The Lions won the 4A title in 2023.

“We know them as former state champion,” Pitts said. “I know things have changed head coach-wise, but the nucleus of a good program is still there.”
