SHAWNEE — Bethany got just enough offense and a pick-six on defense for a 28-21 win over 5A Shawnee Friday (Sept. 18).
The Bronchos (1-3) built a 14-7 lead in the first half with rushing touchdowns. After two runs from senior quarterback Brody McLaren, junior Xzavier McGee punched it in from three yards out. After a Shawnee score, McLaren added a 14-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
The Bethany defense had stopped the Wolves in the first half on fourth down and forced a missed field goal. In the third quarter, the defense added a score of its own.
Broncho senior Tristan Garrett tipped a pass from Shawnee junior quarterback Tal Leone. It was tipped again and landed in the arms of senior Troy Brooks, who returned it 60 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-7.
On the next series after the pick-six, junior Collin Knudsen added another interception. However, the Bronchos later had to punt.
A bad snap on the punt set Shawnee (2-2) up with good field position. That led to the first of two rushing touchdowns from freshman Drayson Morgan to make it 21-14.
Neither team could get in the end zone. The Broncho defense had a goal-line stand and forced an incompletion on 4th-and-goal.
In the fourth quarter, it was an interception from sophomore Payne Sanders which led to the Bronchos’ final score. After a return into Shawnee territory, Bethany freshman Braxton Arthur caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from McLaren to extend the lead to 28-14.
Morgan scored again for Shawnee with 2:29 remaining. Bethany was able to drain most of the clock but the defense needed one more stop.
A pass-interference call against the Bronchos on the final heave for the Wolves gave Shawnee an untimed down. Shawnee completed the pass but the receiver was stopped at the Broncho 4-yard line to end the game.

The Bronchos open 4A-1 play at home against Woodward (3-1) for Homecoming next Friday (Sept. 25) at 7 p.m.
