OKLAHOMA CITY — Southmoore held Putnam City North scoreless in the second half and pulled away for a 43-14 win over the Panthers Friday (Sept. 19) at Panther Stadium.

The Panthers trailed, 7-0, in the first quarter. North moved the ball to midfield and senior Josh Lombard sprinted around the edge on a quarterback keeper to the Southmoore 27-yard line.

Two plays later, senior Isaiah Southern got North to the Sabercat 14. A Southmoore penalty moved the Panthers to the 7 and two plays later, senior Terry Wilson, Jr. ran it up the middle for a four-yard score to tie the game at 7-7.

Southmoore answered with 1:29 left in the opening quarter, junior quarterback Taven Hayes rolled out of the pocket and found no one on the left side of the field. He cruised in for a seven-yard touchdown run.

The Sabercats would score one more time in the quarter when a Lombard pass was tipped in the air and intercepted by Southmoore senior Na’kwaine Carter in North territory.

On the next play, Hayes connected with junior Ely Beamus for a 32-yard score. Southmoore converted 2-point conversion on a run by junior Tylenn Diggs to take a 22-7 lead.

On the first play of the second quarter, the Panthers struck back. Lombard took off on a quarterback run and sprinted towards the North sideline. He sprinted past Sabercat defenders and tip-toed along the sideline for a 78-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to eight points, 22-14.

North had a chance to tie the game just before halftime. Sophomore Dominic Spotwood picked off a tipped pass and returned it into Southmoore territory.

The Panthers’ drive stalled and North turned the ball over on downs with 18 seconds left.

Two plays later, Southmoore cashed in when Hayes found junior Ashton Jay behind a Panther defender for a 51-yard score to make it 29-14 with three second left before half.

The Sabercats held North scoreless in the second half and scored two more times for the comfortable win.
