OKLAHOMA CITY – Despite having an early lead, Putnam City North couldn’t overcome two big innings by Southmoore, losing 12-2 to the Class 6A defending state champs Tuesday (Aug. 20) in a District 2 contest.
Junior Mikala Coats and her sister, senior Monica Coats, led off the bottom of the first with walks. A passed ball moved the pair to second and third. The Lady Panthers cashed in junior Jaya Stevenson singled to center field and North led, 2-1.
The Sabercats answered with five runs in the second inning on three singles, a double, a hit batter and a North error, making it 6-2.
It stayed that way until the sixth inning when Southmoore exploded for four single, a double, a triple and a walk, scoring six runs to secure the run-rule win.
Stevenson went 1-for-2 on the day. Senior Raya Shawareb was 1-for-3 and added a stolen base.
