Putnam City North opened the season with a doubleheader sweep of Booker T. Washington Tuesday (August 13), winning 6-2 and 10-0.
GAME 1: PUTNAM CITY NORTH 6, BOOKER T. WASHINGTON 2
Senior Monica Coats carried a no-hitter to the fourth inning. Coats allowed a lone hit, walking one batter and striking out 15 in 5 2/3 innings of work.
The Lady Panthers (1-0) banged out 13 hits in the win. Sophomore went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Junior Kylee Smith added a 3-for-3 day, scoring twice.
North broke open a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Orton singled, senior Raya Shawareb had a bunt single, Angel Franklin doubled to left, Coats singled and Aubrey Miller grounded in a run as the Lady Panthers plated four runs in the inning to make it 5-0.
In all, eight North batters collected a hit.
GAME 2: PUTNAM CITY NORTH 10, BOOKER T. WASHINGTON 0 (4 INNINGS)
The Lady Panthers scored seven runs in the first inning, aided by seven walks from Booker T. Washington pitcher Vanessa Smith in the inning. In all, North had 12 free passes in the game.
Shawareb, freshman Kayleigh Andrews and Orton each got a hit for North, now 2-0.
Junior Jayda Stevenson earned the win, throwing two hitless innings and striking out six. Miller allowed a lone hit in two innings of relief, striking out two batters.
UP NEXT: The Panthers head to the Broken Arrow Tournament Friday (August 16), meeting Edmond North and Tahlequah. Game times are 10 a.m. and 5:15 p.m.
