EDMOND – A late-inning surge was enough for Edmond Santa Fe to beat Putnam City West, 6-3, Monday (March 25) in a Class 6A District 1 game.

The Patriots (1-7, 0-5) trailed 2-0 in the sixth inning when the West plated three runs. Senior Jaxon Hyde Herrera doubled to center field to lead off the inning. Fellow senior Winston Hamilton, Jr. singled to center. Sophomore Jayvn Mitchell cleared the bases with a double to center, tying the game at 2-2.

Mitchell advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Aaron De Loera. Mitchell then stole home to give West the 3-2 lead. The Patriots would load the bases later in the inning on an error, a hit batsman and a single but couldn’t push across another run.

in the bottom half of the sixth inning, the Wolves (7-6, 3-2) took advantage of three West errors, a hit batter, walk and a single to score four runs to take the final lead.

Mitchell went 3-for-4 and Hyde Herrera went 2-for-4 in the loss. West outhit Santa Fe, 8-4.

On the mound, Hyde Herrera got a no-decision, scattering three hits and striking out seven batters.

Santa Fe sophomore starter Savion Sims also got a no-decision, allowing four hits and striking out 11 batters.

UP NEXT: The Patriots host the Wolves Tuesday (March 26) in the final game of the two-game district series. First pitch is at 5 p.m.
