OKLAHOMA CITY — Seeking his team’s first win of the season and coming off a tough overtime loss to a rival, Putnam City North coach Brian Lockart didn’t like everything he saw in the first half of the Panthers’ game with Lawton Eisenhower Friday (Oct. 9).

North had widened its over the Eagles in the second quarter, but looked “flat” at times against the winless Eagles. However, a halftime chat with his team turned the contest into a 63-7 blowout win at Panther Stadium.

“You need to end it the right way so you can really celebrate the feeling of a win by winning the right way,” Lockart remembered telling his team in the locker room. “They really came out a little bit more dialed in, a little bit more intense, more focused, less penalties, staying together, and the end result is we looked a lot better in the second half.”

North had only one second half penalty. After halftime, the Panthers scored five more times. The North defense added an interception which led to a touchdown and a scoop-and-score for another touchdown.

The point total was the most since a 70-0 shutout of Capitol Hill on Oct. 11, 2024. That game set a school record and Friday’s game landed in the top five in school history for the most points scored.

The outburst came with a new quarterback in sophomore Vaiaulu Toles, who came in for junior Owen McMahan last Friday (Oct. 2) near the end of the Panthers’ overtime loss to Putnam City. McMahan was still in concussion protocol so Toles got the nod against Ike.

Against the Eagles, he responded by throwing five touchdown passes, torching Eisenhower for 253 yards in the air. Toles also scored twice on the ground.

“He’s got a lot of zip on his ball,” Lockart said. “We’re working with him on learning the trajectory of his throws based on the routes. They can’t all be bullets. Sometimes we want to put a lot of air underneath it.

“But what I really liked about him was he showed some really good composure.”

One example of Toles making plays came midway through the second quarter.

After two first quarter scores, the Panthers only had a 13-7 lead after a blocked punt for an Ike score.

Two series later, Toles couldn’t handle a high snap. He was able to corral the ball and stay upright. Toles turned around with Ike defenders closing in and threw off his back foot, lofting the ball high in the air to sophomore Rylen Harris for a 16-yard catch.

That drive ended with a 4-yard touchdown run from Toles, beginning a 50-0 run to end the game.

Toles connected with five different receivers for touchdowns.

Late in the second quarter, senior Gavin Davis hauled in a 58-yard score. Davis caught the ball at the 38-yard line, breaking a tackle to find the end zone for a 28-7 lead.

North (1-5, 1-1) also ran the ball effectively, gaining 190 yards with 127 yards of that total coming in the second half.

Junior Jasiah Davis paced the Panthers with 108 yards on 20 carries. Davis also had a score.

Lockart was glad to see the junior move south from Deer Creek this season.

“He’s starting to run behind his pads a little bit better. He’s understanding when he can cut and when he needs to just hit the hole,” Lockart said of Jasiah Davis. “It’s really changing the way that we look offensively.”

Lockart also highlighted his offensive line, which still has some growing to do.

One part of the youth movement is sophomore tackle Cooper Sharp and sophomore guard Demetrionte Bruner.

“To put those kids out there and see them starting to feel like they can do it, these reps now have got to pay off by the time they’re a junior and a senior.

“I’m hoping that bodes well for the future if they stay consistent and continue to grow, get bigger in the weight room, and just mature and get bigger as their bodies grow.”

UP NEXT

North has a short week before traveling to 6A-II-1 leader Choctaw next Thursday (Oct. 15) for a fall break matchup.

The Yellowjackets (5-2, 3-0) earned a 45-30 win over Piedmont on Friday.

Lockart knows the Yellowjackets, state champions in 2024 and runner-up last season, will be a tough matchup.

“I just told them, ‘Hey, let’s just go see.’ We know what we’re up against.

“I still want to go out there and compete against great talent like that and see where we’re at against that type of program.”
