NORMAN — For the second straight week, Putnam City held on for an overtime win on a special teams play.
This time, a fumbled snap on a 2-point conversion gave the Pirates a 28-27 win Thursday (Oct. 8) at Harve Collins Field.
The wild ending came after the Pirates took the lead on two second half touchdowns after trailing for most of the game, 7-0.
Original had missed scoring opportunities but finally broke through on a third down-and-short play. Senior quarterback Daeveon Simmons dove up the middle on a quarterback sneak. He got the first down yardage and squeezed through defenders up the middle. From there, Simmons sprinted past everyone for a 60-yard touchdown run with 1:21 left in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Putnam City took the lead on a 57-yard catch by sophomore Kiarri Franklin.
Just one play after Simmons converted a tough fourth down run, he went deep for Franklin but the ball was slightly underthrown. Norman sophomore Ke’von Jeffries appeared to have an interception but Franklin snagged the ball from behind as Jeffries fell to the turf at the 14-yard line. Franklin sprinted easily for the goalline while Jeffries pounded his fist on the turf in disgust.
The Tigers answered on the next drive. Norman backup quarterback Chase Watson connected with senior Kole Baden for an 11-yard score to tie the game at 14-14 with six minutes left in the game.
Original was forced to punt on the next drive. Norman followed with a 12-play, 78-yard drive which took 2:56 off the clock. Watson scored from 10 yards out to give the Tigers a 21-14 lead with 53 seconds left.
It took the Pirates four plays to tie the game. Simmons found Shawn Jones III over the middle for a 22-yard gain to the Norman 42-yard line.
Two plays later, Jones got behind the defense for a 30-yard catch to the Tiger 14. With no timeouts left, Simmons spiked the ball with 13 seconds left. Then, he connected with Jones again at the left pylon. The extra point by senior Edgar Yanez sent the game into overtime with a 21-21 tie.
PC got the ball first in overtime. After two running plays from the 10-yard line. Simmons rolled out to the right and found freshman Andres Pollard wide open behind the defense. The 6-foot-3, 270 pound tight end leapt up to make the catch for a 5-yard score to give Putnam City a 28-21 lead.
The Tigers answered in their overtime possession. Watson rolled to his right and then threw back across the field to a wide open Cyncere Pekah for a 5-yard touchdown.
Norman was lined up to kick an extra point, but Pirate junior Kenneth Young jumped across the line early. The encroachment penalty moved the ball to the 1 1/2 yard line.
After the penalty, the Tigers went for two points. Watson lined up under center, but never got the snap. He tried to burrow into the mass of bodies to find the ball but Pirate senior linebacker Wyatt Keefer ended up with it and PC had another walkoff win.
Putnam City amassed 491 yards on offense to Norman’s 366.
Simmons completed of 20 of 27 passes for 238 yards and three scores. Simmons’ only blemish was a first quarter interception. That pick ended a promising PC drive. Two plays later, Norman senior quarterback Joseph Kelley sprinted 87 yards to make it 7-0.
Jones caught eight of those passes for 146 yards and a touchdown.
Simmons also rushed eight times for 100 yards. Senior Kahmi Herrera rushed 14 times for 91 yards.
