BLANCHARD — Bethany’s season ended Wednesday (April 29) with an extra-innings loss and a tough inning in game two of the 4A Regional 7 playoffs.
CACHE 2, BETHANY 1 (9 INN.)
A pitcher’s duel turned into heartache with a walkoff win for the Bulldogs.
Bethany junior Connor Sydnes tossed eight innings and struck out nine batters. He allowed six hits and walked one.
“Sydnes threw his heart out, we just couldn’t capitalize at the plate,” Bethany coach Robert Lee said via text.
The Bronchos took a first-inning lead. Sophomore Cooper Suarez led off the game with an infield single. Cache junior pitcher Garrett Graham coaxed a flyout from junior Cooper Willis. Suarez took second an error by the catcher. He moved to third on a ground out by sophomore Cruz Burleson.
Sydnes walked and senior Trip Williams singled to left to give Bethany the early lead.
Cache answered in the second inning when junior Thomas Landis lined a ball over the right field wall to tie the game.
Bethany had baserunners in every inning but one. The Bronchos had a scoring opportunity in the seventh inning when two walks and a hit batsmen loaded the bases.
In the eighth inning, Willis doubled to left field. A single by junior Ozzie Brown moved Willis to third but Sydnes flied out to center field to end the inning.
In the ninth inning, Cache senior Deshaun Harvey singled to left. Freshman Rocco Treisa doubled to left to score Harvey for the walkoff win.
Suarez, Willis, Brown, Williams, freshmen Jayden Rose and Issac Bellows each had a hit.
Graham and junior Reed Gillispie combined to strike out 10 Bronchos in the contest.

Blanchard junior Wyatt Pendegraph held the Bronchos without a hit in the five-inning run-rule win. Pendergraph struck out 10.
“We saw probably the best arm we’ve seen all year,” Lee said of Pendergraph. “I think we could have competed better on the mound and at the plate.”
The Lions built a 4-0 lead when things escalated in the fourth inning. Blanchard exploded for 11 hits and three walks along with a Bethany error in a 14-run inning.
Brown was the Bronchos’ lone baserunner with a four-pitch walk in the fourth.

BRONCHOS LOOK AHEAD
Lee said his team’s youth was factor with only one senior (Williams) playing after the injury to Karter Thomas.
“We were incredibly young this year, coupled with injuries to key guys was very hard to overcome,” Lee said. “We’ve got good players and great kids.
“This summer is crucial to all our returners to know what they need to improve on, but more importantly to come together as a team. If we do, I think we will compete at a high level. That’s only if we come together.”
