OKLAHOMA CITY — Putnam City North had four players score in double figures in a 92-43 win over Enid Friday (Feb. 27) in the 6A East Regional 1 playoffs.

The Panthers (25-1) play for the regional title at home Saturday at 7 p.m.

Late in the first quarter, the Plainsmen (3-21) kept pace with North, trailing 10-9.

During an Enid timeout, North coach DJ Lemons exhorted his team to be aggressive and go to the rim as Enid didn’t have a shot blocking advantage.

The Panthers responded, scoring the last six points of the opening quarter. By the midway point of the second quarter, North’s lead was in double digits.

“I’d rather have a game where we’ve got challenges instead of just a straight blowout from the beginning,” Lemons said. “So, now they understand the seriousness of behind every game and how being the number one team, like everybody’s going to give you their their best shot.”

The Panthers were still without leading scorer Mekhi Thomas, who is recovering from injury. The junior is expected back on the court Saturday.

Even without Thomas, North got points from 11 different players in the win.

Junior Miles Jackson scored 21 points off the bench. He also had a pair of rebounds. Jackson had three slam dunks in the contest.

Senior Nate Muriithi added 19 points, his highest point total since December. Muriithi had a slam dunk, four rebounds, a steal and two blocked shots.

“We need that from him,” Lemons said Muriithi’s scoring. “We need him to be that guy that he’s supposed to be.”

Sophomore Keaton Murry followed with 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Senior TJ McNeely had 11 points, four rebounds and four assists. Sophomore CJ Heskett had eight points, two assists and a steal.

Sophomore Devion Gillispie played in Thomas’ spot in the lineup. Gillispie had six points on two 3-pointers. Gillispie led the team with nine rebounds, three assists and and a steal.

“We’ve been doing that all year having different lineups and rotations,” Lemons said. “I felt like (Gillispie) did what he was supposed to do tonight. I felt like he held it down.”

Lemons said that getting contributions for a lot of players will beneficial.

“It’s hard to scout a team that has more than two or three main guys. So, now you got to pick your poison and our leading scorers were guys that come off the bench as well. So, that’s that’s even a plus.”

TIP-INS

  • Senior Malakye Schoats only had a point but he added seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Sophomore Zak Pettie had five points and five rebounds off the bench.
