OKLAHOMA CITY — Freshman Morgan McNutt captured the the girls individual title and both the Bethany boys and girls teams qualified for state at the Heritage Hall 4A Regional Saturday (Oct. 18).
The event was delayed from 11 and 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 and 1 p.m. due to rain
“The weather was frustrating but like we know that’s out of our control,” Bethany coach Zac Coulson said via text.
After the cool rain moved off, The sun came out and the humidity went up.
“Those conditions became tough for everyone. I know many of the kids wish they had ran better, but we can’t control Mother Nature, and with the delay and weather change, it made a huge factor,” Coulson said. “We showed up, ran with heart and still qualified for state and that’s what is important.”
Coulson said it was a big deal for the boys and girls squad to qualify for state back-to-back.
“I hope they know how proud we are of them for that.”
MORGAN MCNUTT WINS BIG, GIRLS FINISH SECOND
Morgan McNutt won the girls race by 22 seconds, beating Mannford junior Marley Beshear 11:57 to 12:19.
Sophomore Shayne Vonfeldt finished fifth with a time of 12:26.
All five Broncho runners finished in the top 25: freshman Kayden Wright (17th, 13:12), junior Ava League (20th, 13;31) and senior Maddison McNutt (23rd, 13:37).
Coulson said the second place regional finish was the highest for a girls team in school history.
“Having five girls in the top 25 was awesome,” Coulson said.
He also said League ” ran a brilliant race.”
BOYS LAND IN FIFTH FOR STATE BERTH
Coulson said he didn’t think the boys had their best performance.
“I was really proud of their heart and grit after dealing with the wild morning and two-hour delay.”
The fifth place team finish was the important outcome for Bethany “because there are many teams who wished they qualified,” Coulson said.
The Broncho coach said sophomore Salyer Stayton (13th, 17:09) and fellow sophomore Aiden Donoghue (25th, 17:42) “ran great races!”
