WEATHERFORD — After jumping out to an early 7-0 lead, Bethany had to hold on for an 8-6 win over Weatherford Thursday (Sept. 18) in a 4A-3 game.
The game was the Bronchos’ fourth game in as many days with a couple of makeup games moved to this week due to weather.
“Proud of the girls again for getting through this seemingly endless week with another win,” Bethany coach Booker Blakley said via text. “Still got one more to go (Friday) obviously, but just proud of the way they have been fighting through fatigue and illness and injury.”
With one out in the first inning, Bethany pounced on the Eagles with five straight singles to take a 3-0 lead. In the second inning, freshman Rian Rollins hit a two-run home run to make 5-0. In the third inning, senior Berkley Johnson added a two-run shot with two outs to extend the lead to 7-0.
Blakley said his team had “some timely hitting in the first inning and then some power shots in the second and third (innings).”
Weatherford climbed back in the game in the final three innings.
The Eagles scored two runs in the fifth, taking advantage of two Broncho errors.
Bethany added an insurance run in the sixth inning as a walk by junior Jules Barger and an error made it 8-2.
Weatherford added two more runs in the sixth on two doubles and two singles. In the seventh Eagle senior Kaitlyn Bryant hit a two-run home run to pull within two runs with no one out.
Senior Paige Sechrist worked around an error to seal the win.
“We let our foot off the gas a little bit and Weatherford is a good team and punished us for it. But, we were able to make enough plays in the end,” Blakley said.
The Bronchos smacked 10 hits in the win. Senior Madison Bibbs, Rollins and senior Paige Sechrist each had two hits. Bibbs had a double.
Barger, junior Ella Davis and Johnson each had a hit.
Senior Jayda Davis earned the win after allowing seven hits over five innings. Only two of the four runs she allowed were earned.
Sechrist entered the game with no one out in the sixth and pitched around trouble with Bethany leading 8-6. She got the three outs, helped out by double play.
Sechrist threw the last two innings. She allowed two hits and two runs. Sechrist struck out one batter.
“Right now it is taking all of us in one way or another and the girls are doing a great job of attacking each day as a team,” Blakley said.
The win helped Bethany get some breathing room in second place in 4A-3 at 6-2, ahead of Kingfisher (6-4 in district play), Weatherford (5-4) and Woodward (4-4).
The Bronchos have four district games left. Kingfisher has two remaining, Weatherford has three district games to play and Woodward has four district games left.
