ELK CITY — District leader Elk City walked off with a 2-1 win over Bethany Monday (Sept. 15) in 4A-3 contest.
Tied 1-1 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the Elkettes broke through.
Senior Brenyn Ball doubled to right field. Bethany senior Paige Sechrist coaxed a groundout for the first out. Freshman Magi Geno reached base on an infield error which moved Brenyn Ball to third base.
Junior Luci O’Hara laid down a bunt which scored Brenyn Ball to win the game for Elk City.
Bethany coach Booker Blakley said walk off loss was an “unfortunate ending to a hard fought game,” Blakley said via text. “Have to do a better job in the opportunities that we get.”
A two-out rally in the fifth plated Bethany its only run. The Bronchos loaded the bases on a single from junior Emma Geissler and back-to-back walks to senior Maddison McNutt and junior Jules Barger.
Senior Madison Bibbs hit a ball to the third baseman which she couldn’t handle. The error allowed Geissler to score.
In the sixth, Blakley Ball doubled to lead off the inning. An infield error moved Blakley Ball to third base.
Senior Aubrie Pogue lofted a sacrifice fly to center field which scored Blakley Ball.
Pogue allowed only hit over seven innings. She walked four batters and struck out 10.
Sechrist scattered four hits over 6 1/3 innings. None of the two runs she allowed were earned. Sechrist didn’t walk a batter and struck out five.
“Pitching was solid again,” Blakley said. “Our pitching staff is putting us in places for us to succeed so we need to help them out on the offensive end a bit more.”
In addition to Geissler’s hit, McNutt, Barger, Bibbs and Rollins each walked once.
