Putnam City North opened the season Friday (Sept. 5) with a 32-19 loss to 5A Shawnee.

The Panthers have a new coach in Brian Lockart, who was the associate head coach under Derek Lane, who joined the football staff at Yukon.

Lockart also has stints as an assistant at Deer Creek and Yukon. He also has been an assistant baseball coach at North.

“Excited to lead these young men and continue to build the culture with an amazing staff while being a servant leader for the program,” Lockart said in a preseason questionnaire.

The Panthers will have a new look with several impact players graduating last year.

“We lost some really talented players who are now playing in college,” Lockart said. “Not easy to replace but we have had some young men step up and fill those roles. I am confident they will be ready for the challenges they will face this season. At the same time we have many pieces returning so if we can build that team cohesion and play together then we will be ok.”

Senior Mason Jones is one of the returners. The 5-foot-11 Jones threw for 1,277 yards last season with 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

One of the bigger shoes to fill is at the running back position with Milton Alford graduating. Alford rushed for 1,189 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Fellow senior receiver and defensive back Bravion Stubbs (6’0″) caught 16 passes for 228 yards and two scores as a junior.

Senior Caari Coleman (6’2″) is a returner on the offensive and defensive line.

Another senior, Isaiah Southern (6’2″) is a tight end and linebacker. Southern had one catch for 12 yards. On defense, he had 16 tackles, four for a loss.

North will have several new faces. Senior Victor Flores (6’0″) is an offensive and defensive lineman from Deer Creek. Joining him on the line is junior Adrienne Cheatham (6’2″), also from Deer Creek.

Junior wide receiver and defensive back Jonathan Bryden (5’11”) joins the Panthers from Mustang.

Senior running back and defensive back Terry Wilson Jr. is a transfer from Putnam City West.

Senior Joshua Lombard (6’0″) is back at North after a season at Putnam City. Lombard threw for 554 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions while splitting time with another quarterback last year with the Pirates.
