EDMOND – Both Bethany’s boys and girls teams competed in the Class 4A State Championship Saturday (Nov. 2) at Edmond Santa Fe.

It was the first time since 2018 that both the boys and girls teams qualified for state.

The girls squad finished 16th.

Freshman Shayne Vonfeldt was unable to finish the race due to a medical issue. Vonfeldt was in fifth place at 2500 meters with a time of 9:08.40.

Bethany coach Zac Coulson said Vonfeldt was 15 meters away from the finish line.

“It was heartbreaking,” Coulson said via text.

The Bethany coach said the some of the girls runners set personal records in the race.

Pacing the Lady Bronchos was senior Gracie Sparks. She finished 36th with a time of 13:24.11.

“Gracie finished off her career with a great race,” Coulson said. “The other girls get to take this race as momentum into next year with a positive finish to the year.”

The boys team finished 14th. Senior Artur Calderon led the Bronchos with a 26th place finish in 17:13.11.

“I was so proud of their effort. They left it all out there today,” Coulson said. “It was a great day for the young boys for growth and to take into next year.”

Coming off a boys state championship with a younger squad, Coulson is excited for the future, including growth in the girls program.

“I am beyond excited for the next several years with all these young runners.”
