OKLAHOMA CITY — Bethany’s playoff run ended Tuesday (March 10) after playing wire-to-wire with top-ranked Douglass in a 37-34 loss in the opening round of the 4A state tournament at OG&E Coliseum.

The 11th-ranked Bronchos held the Trojans to under 40 points. Entering this game, Douglass had been averaging 62.1 points a game.

After a tight game throughout, the Trojans looked to be pulling away with 4:25 left in the game and led, 30-26, which was their largest lead. Then, they led 34-30 with 1:04 left.

Sophomore Breck Brady was fouled and hit 1 of 2 free throws. After Brady missed the second free throw, senior Denton Jaggers grabbed the rebound. He ended up scoring on the play to make it 34-33 with 1:01 left.

On the other end, senior Jagger Weaver intercepted a Douglass inbounds pass with :45 left. Weaver tossed it to Jaggers who went up for the slam and missed it.

Junior Wyatt Keefer grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Keefer hit the backend of two free throws to tie it at 34-34.

Douglass junior Nkem House followed with a layup with :22 left to give the Trojans a 36-34 lead.

After Bethany’s final timeout, the Bronchos inbounded the ball but Weaver lost control of the the ball out of bounds with 12.8 seconds left.

Now, the Bronchos werer forced to foul. Trojan junior Trevor Snell hit 1 of 2 to make it 37-34 with 8.3 seconds left.

WIth no timeouts remaining, Jaggers took the inbound, dribbled across midcourt and passed it to Chatman in the corner. Chatman was immediately double-teamed and missed a contested 3-pointer off the back of the iron. The buzzer sounded while there was a scramble for the rebound.

Despite the loss Bethany coach Josh Holliday praised his squad. The have qualified for state two years in a row.

“I would go to war seven days a week with that group,” Holliday said via text. “Some of the best kids that I’ve ever had the pleasure of being around. Not only are they warriors, they are even better kids.

“They accomplished so much this year and represented their families and community so well. I’m so proud of them and proud to be their coach. That group of seniors left this program way better than they found it.”

Brady finished with a game-high 21 points on 5-of-12 shooting. He was 11-of-16 from the free throw line. Brady completed the double-double with 12 rebounds.

Jaggers added five points and four rebounds on 2-of-6 shooting. Weavers hit a 3-pointer in the first quarter which gave the Bronchos the largest lead of the game by either team at six points (9-3).

Keefer followed with three points. Keefer was 1-of-3 from the field with a trey. Keefer had one rebound and a steal. Chatman also had three points on 1-of-4 shooting. Chatman had an assist and a steal.

Senior Seth Greiner added two points and three rebounds.

The Bronchos shot 33 percent from the field and 67 percent from the line. Douglass also shot 33 percent.

TIP-INS

  • There were only three lead changes in the game. There were five ties.
  • The teams tied in the paint at 16 points apiece.
  • The Bronchos won the second chance points battle, 9-4.
  • A majority of the scoring came from the starters. Bethany won the off-the-bench category, 3-1.
  • The Bronchos lost the turnover battle, 19-15. Bethany outrebounded the Trojans, 28-17.
  • Douglass had 13 points off turnovers and the Bronchos scored nine points off Trojan turnovers.
  • Douglass senior Jamel Morris led the Trojans with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Morris was 5-of-7 from the free throw line.
  • Fellow senior Zuo Kpogba added 10 points and five rebounds.
